Albert Barron came up with the Pizza as a Service example when asked. What’s aaS? as in as a Service.   He broke down the basics of cloud computing and its associated service models by using the example of making a pizza. The “Pizza as a Service” example is quite simple is be explained as:

1. You can make a pizza at home where you’re responsible for buying all of the ingredients including making the dough.

2. You can purchase some of the ingredients and buy pre-packaged dough.

3 You can have pizza delivered to your home.

4. You can simply load up the family and head out for pizza at your local dining establishment. In each case you’re still having pizza however in some cases you do all of the work and others you have other people do the work for  you.

I like his thinking and this example in explaining the cloud delivery models.  Below is what is the traditional explanation of what aaS means:

Basically, the cloud “as a Service” delivery model ties to who manages which piece of the stack which makes up a traditional application hosting environment.   As you work your way up from the bottom of the stack, you change the aaS delivery model by changing the responsibility of what you manage to what someone else manages.  When you manage your IT in its entirety,  then you are not taking advantage of cloud.  If you give the entire stack to someone else to manage then you are using a Software as a Service delivery model.  If you are not comfortable with outsourcing all of your IT functions but told to consider cloud.  Looking at a IaaS or PaaS delivery model may be the best first step for your organization.
